- Glaucoma or popular known as “Kala Motiyabind” in Hindi is a progressive disorder of the Optic Nerve, caused due to raised pressure inside the Eye, leading to blindness.

Symptoms of Glaucoma –
Glaucoma is referred to as the “silent thief of sight” , as it may not cause any symptom other than gradual loss of vision which may sometimes go unnoticed in early stages. Unfortunately, the damage caused by glaucoma to the eye is permanent and irreversible. Hence it is important to diagnose it early and treat it timely.
In some acute forms of glaucoma, Symptoms may include –
- Sudden severe eye/brow pain or headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Blurred vision
- Halos around lights
- Sudden loss of sight
- Eye redness
Risk factors for Glaucoma –
Although anyone can develop glaucoma, but some individuals are considered to be at a higher risk. These include –
- Age 60 and above
- A family history of glaucoma
- Genetic Origin – African American, Hispanic or Asians are at a Higher risk
- High Myopia or Nearsightedness
- Migraines or Raynaud’s Phenomenon
- Long-term use of corticosteroid medication
- Medical conditions such as high blood pressure
Glaucoma Diagnosis -
Glaucoma can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam performed by an eye doctor. Individuals at a high risk should undergo regular Eye Examinations at an Eye clinic every three to four months so that even early cases can be detected in time and treated.
The following tests are performed during the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of Glaucoma
- IOP (Intraocular Pressure) Test
- Corneal Pachymetry
- Clinical Optic Disc Evaluation with 90D Lens
- Gonioscopy Test
For those patients who are suspects based on the above clinical tests, advanced tests need to be performed. These include –
- OCT RNFL Analysis
- Visual Field Charting
For patients diagnosed with glaucoma and are on treatment, the advanced tests may need to be repeated at regular intervals to diagnose any progression and take timely action.
You may be prescribed eye drops to slow the progression of the glaucoma. It is vital that you take all medications regularly as prescribed.
If the condition is not controlled by medication, surgery may be recommended. Your surgeon will discuss the options, which may include laser or conventional surgery. Sudden severe eye pain or vision changes require emergency treatment.
